課程概述

Remote sensing is a very powerful tool for earth observation; it is also solid science developed from the basics of physics. The objectives of this course are to help students understand: (1) What is remote sensing? (2) How remote sensing can be used to study our environments? 

課程目標
The course will focus on remote sensing theories and applications. Upon completion of this course, students should understand the basic concepts and theories of remote sensing, and be able to use it to model environments.

There will be two mid-term exams, which are in-class and close book exams. They may include fill in the blank, multiple choice, matching and short essay questions. The previous years’ exams can be found in the course website. Only materials covered in the lectures will be included in the exam. If you can’t make it due to medical emergency, you need to provide a doctor’s note, or there is no make-up exam for you.

Field trip: Participation of the field activities is mandatory. There will be a week long field validation exercise scheduled in this semester. The field dates may be changed subject to the weather condition.

Final group project (Mapbook): The final project is a collective work of the lab exercises based upon the knowledge gained through the course of lectures, which attempts to understand the land use and land cover change of a subset of the Taipei Basin. Students will carry out the project as a group of three students. The project consists of two major parts: image processing and a collection of map stories. In the final presentation, I want you to show me how your time series land use and land cover maps are generated and the quality of your analysis. In addition, I want you to select THREE subsets of the maps and tell me the stories of land use and land cover change of these places. This part is so-called the Mapbook. It should be composed in PPT with 6 slides; each selected story should be presented as a slide of map(s) and a slide of description. This part (6 slides + a cover page with your names) should be presented in the final presentation and turned in at the end of the semester. The Mapbook is worth 30% and it should be evaluated properly and unbiasedly. Therefore, the scores are based upon the peer, teaching assistant’s (TA) and instructor’s evaluations. Every student is asked to select THREE map stories from OTHER groups. The top five map stories with the most picks will be selected as Mapbook 2017. In addition, the intersection of independent evaluations provided by the TA and instructor that is (are) not included in the most-pick group will also be added to the annual map collection. The group with maximum 3-2-1 picks will be graded as 100-97-93%, respectively, for the Mapbook part. Generally, curved scores of 80–90% will be given by referring to the numbers of picks received.

Participation: This part occupies 10% of your final grade and it’s not a given. It consists of three parts: field trip attendance (3%), final presentation attendance (3%) and Mapbook evaluation (4%). We don’t take the roll in this class except for the field trip and final presentation. Also, you are asked to evaluate other groups’ Mapbooks. You should upload your evaluation before the deadline.
